BUFF 2024

When: 5-7 September 2024

Where: Østre in Bergen, Norway

Set to unfold during three days in September in the beating heart of Bergen, Bergen Unstable Film Festival is an independent festival developed to showcase local and international filmmakers and artists across the disciplines of film, performance and installation art.

Fostering collaboration between interdisciplinary artforms, the festival will reimagine an experimental format across entangling boundaries between art and film; an unstable festival that aimes to stimulate community building and inclusivity through renewed questions and unconventional approaches.

BUFF aims to be the first cultural event in Bergen whose principal aim is to screen independent, experimental films in a non-traditional context, providing an exciting, alternative platform for artists and filmmakers to show their work.

We believe in the balance between comfort and progression as a necessary step for a culture to develop and strive to partake in a rich and inclusive society. By fostering an international platform of collective involvement we aim to build a community willing to create radical new stories utilising renewed connections and untested ways of thinking.

Selected filmmakers will experience an extravagant festival housed at Østre in Bergen, a renowned venue for multidisciplinary art and the best technical equipment, among talented filmmakers and artists.

There will be opportunities for networking and socializing within and beyond the frame of the festival, and in the end we will throw a grand party for everyone, during which there will be opportunities to mingle with other artists and future collaborators, dance or experience the artistic landscape around.

What to expect

Three winners will be selected by the audience and announced on the final day.

Each winner will be given an artwork as trophy, crafted by a local artist.

As an ending gesture, we will showcase the final film as a honourable mention based upon the verdict of the panel of judges.

All officially selected films will have a live screening at each edition.

All the winners will be invited to a Q&A interview session on our website and posted along our social media.

Accepted entries are promoted through our social media and website.

All the winners of each edition will receive a certificate.

All officially selected projects of each edition will receive the BUFF laurel.

As we believe that good films should be watched many times, the winning films of each edition of the festival may be selected for special screening in the following editions.

About Us

Bergen Unstable Film Festival is an independent film festival dedicated to showcasing alternative filmmaking and interdisciplinary art.

All of our organisers have professional experience as interdisciplinary artists, filmmakers, photographers, technical assistants, festival participants, production assistants, and festival volunteers.

We envision BUFF as a social space where participants will cross-pollinate ideas, stress intersections between cultures while acknowledging their respective idiosyncrasies, and move away from trends that tend to move towards societal separation.
